Funky Friday at B.B. King's in NYC 5/27/05

On Friday night, I kicked off Memorial Day Weekend by attending a funky, funky show by Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, @BB King's in NYC. It was a last minute thing, and I'm way glad I got to see and hear Zig at work.

It was great to finally see one of the kings of funk drumming playing his brand of New Orleans funk; especially on old Meters' tunes like "Cissy Strut" and "Look Ka Py Py". Doug Wimbish (Living Colour) was on bass and really layed it down; he even played a few extended solos, incorporating some cool effects that got the crowd going. Leo Nocentelli's grooves are well known, and well documented, but his chops really surprised me. Unfortunately, the guitar was usually WAY too loud in the mix (which annoyed me slightly), but overall, it was a great show.

If you enjoy authentic, swampy funk from where it all began (New Orleans), I strongly suggest you check out the Meters. Their two CD set "Funkify Your Life" includes most of their classic tunes, with legendary grooves laid down by Zigaboo, himself.
